What Is Vibroacoustic Therapy?

Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) is a noninvasive method that uses low‑frequency sound waves combined with music to deliver gentle vibrations throughout the body. These sound waves are converted into mechanical vibrations via transducers embedded in a bed, chair, mat, or other surface, allowing you to experience a “sound massage from within.”

Unlike external vibration devices, VAT works through sinusoidal, low-frequency sound (often in the 30–120 Hz range), which can be tuned to resonate with tissues and support relaxation, pain relief, and nervous system balance. The effect is a blend of auditory and tactile stimulation designed to promote a calming, restorative experience.

Benefits of Vibroacoustic Therapy

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) offers a variety of potential benefits for both body and mind. Below are key advantages supported by research and clinical experience:

1. Stress Relief & Nervous System Balance

VAT may help shift your nervous system from “fight or flight” into rest-and-digest mode. In a recent study, participants experienced increased parasympathetic activity (indicating more relaxation), lower arousal levels, and improved stress measures after a vibroacoustic “sound massage.”

2. Pain Management & Muscle Relaxation

For people dealing with chronic pain, VAT has shown promising results in reducing perceived discomfort and easing muscle tension. A scoping review of VAT in adults who experience pain highlighted that many protocols used 20–45 minute sessions (often at around 40 Hz) and reported positive effects on pain.  A narrative review also describes VAT’s use for reducing pain, anxiety, and improving physical function.

3. Emotional Well‑Being & Mood Enhancement

Studies suggest that combining vibration with sound may support mood balance and emotional regulation. A 2024 trial on somatosensory music therapy (a variant of VAT) found that in patients with depression, the added vibrational/music component led to greater reductions in depressive symptoms and negative emotions, and improved autonomic balance. In children on the autism spectrum, participants and caregivers reported that VAT felt calming and helped reduce stress.

4. Improved Sleep & Deep Relaxation

Because VAT helps reduce nervous system hyperarousal and promote relaxation, many clients report better sleep quality and feeling more rested. It can help quiet the internal chatter, unwind tension, and support transitioning into deeper states of rest.

5. Support in Rehabilitation & Physical Function

In rehab and clinical settings, VAT may act as a complementary modality to support tissue healing, improve circulation, and assist gentle mobilization. Some case reports and theoretical models suggest that vibrations help loosen stiff tissues, restore range of motion, and enhance comfort during recovery.

Session Options

We offer a 45-minute vibroacoustic therapy session designed to support relaxation, stress relief, and balance. During the session, you’ll lie comfortably on our VAT bed while a customized vibration and sound program is delivered, creating a restorative “sound massage” experience to maximize the therapeutic benefits of sound and vibration.
